Your Child’s First Dental VisitFrom first words to first steps, your child’s initial years of life are full of exciting milestones. While you may not consider it initially, your child’s first tooth is also an important marker. By ensuring that you’re caring for your child’s gums and teeth in the developmental years, you are setting up your precious bundle of joy to have a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Our mission at Larry Caldwell, DDS & Associates is to provide your family with exceptional pediatric dental care in a convenient, comfortable environment.

Planning Your First Children’s Dentistry Appointment

Though it may seem early, your child can start to develop cavities as soon as teeth start growing in. Be sure to bring your child to the dentist within six months of the first tooth appears and no later than his or her first birthday.

Your first visit to your local Sugar Land and Wharton, TX pediatric dentist will most likely not involve any treatment. After checking your child’s gums and teeth, our experienced children’s dentists will educate you on oral care for your growing child, discuss healthy pacifier and bottle habits, demonstrate brushing techniques, and answer any additional questions you may have.

At-Home Infant Oral Care

Your child should visit the dentist at least every six months, but you can ensure that your child stays happy and healthy year-round by practicing good oral care at home every day. Help your child establish healthy oral care routines by doing the following:

  • Use a damp washcloth to clean and massage your infant’s gums after every feeding
  • Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle
  • Give your child a cold wet washcloth or teething ring to help ease the painful symptoms of teething
  • Start using a soft toothbrush to brush your child’s teeth as soon as they begin to emerge

As your child grows and continues to develop a deeper understanding of oral care, be sure to model good habits yourself. Allowing your children to watch you brush and floss your teeth regularly is a key component of setting them up for success!
